Sam Ash Music was founded in 1924 in Brooklyn, New York by Sam Ashkynase and his wife Rose, originally as a small storefront selling sheet music, phonographs, and instruments. It grew into one of the largest family-owned musical instrument and pro-audio retail chains in the United States, known for guitars, effects pedals, recording gear, and DJ equipment. After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2024 and closing all physical stores, its assets were acquired by Mexico-based Gonher Music Group, and the brand relaunched in 2025 as an exclusively online retailer called Sam Ash Direct at its original samash.com domain.
